In short

Freight on the truck

Truck transport here means moving your freight by road, not shipping a vehicle.

Truck transport What it means

Freight by truck, not shipping a truck

From pallets of parts to a flatbed of steel, a truck transport company moves freight from one place to another by road. That is different from services that ship a truck or car as the cargo. This page covers moving your freight on a truck.

Several kinds of companies do this work. A carrier owns the trucks and employs the drivers who haul the load. A truckload broker books a licensed carrier for you and manages the move. An expedited provider focuses on urgent loads that need a dedicated truck running direct.

FullTruckload.com is a truckload broker. We give you direct access to trucks of every size through licensed carriers across the US, Canada and Mexico, backed by 24/7 tracking and one point of contact. Every shipment is monitored from pickup to delivery.

Matching the truck to the shipment

When you know what you are shipping, four questions pick the truck. Size and weight come first: a Sprinter van or box truck for boxes and a few pallets, a straight truck for heavier mid-size loads, a hot shot or flatbed for machinery, and a 53 ft dry van for full enclosed loads.

Urgency is next. A dedicated truck that runs direct suits a firm deadline. Distance decides between a regional run and a long haul, and the sites decide whether you need a liftgate, a dock or a forklift.

We match the truck to your shipment using those four answers. It's also the step that prevents the wrong truck from arriving, so FullTruckload.com confirms them before any truck is booked.

Rule of thumb

Right-size the truck

The truck that fits the freight is usually the cheapest truck that does the job.

Cost Truck transport

What drives the cost of truck transport

A truck move's cost reflects the truck and the trip, larger for a 53 ft trailer than for a van but often lower per pallet. As with most truck freight, distance, weight and size, the type of truck and how soon you need it all affect the cost. Loading needs such as a liftgate, and how many trucks are open on your lane that week, move it as well.

The truck choice is the biggest lever you control. Sending a full trailer for four pallets costs more than a straight truck that fits them. A van that cannot take the weight means a second truck and a lost day.

That is why the details you share matter. FullTruckload.com matches your freight to the truck it actually needs, so you pay for the right capacity and nothing more.

Expectations Truck transport

What a good trucking company tells you

While any company can quote a load, a good one tells you how the move will actually run. Before pickup, expect a clear quote, the truck type, the pickup window and the name of the person to call. During the move, expect updates at pickup and along the way, and early word of any delay so the receiver can plan.

At delivery, expect the signed bill of lading and proof of delivery with the receiver's name and time. If something goes wrong, a good company explains how the claim works and helps you file it, instead of leaving you to sort it out.

For shippers, this level of communication provides a balance of speed and certainty that a lowest-price quote can't match. This makes it a practical test when choosing a company, and FullTruckload.com sets these expectations before you book.

A move, step by step

How a truck move runs, start to claim-free finish

Every truck move FullTruckload.com books follows six steps, including what happens if a claim is needed at the end.

  1. 01

    Describe the freight

Share the commodity, weight, pallet count, dimensions, pickup and delivery addresses, dock hours and dates. These answers decide the right truck and keep the quote accurate.

    • Weight and size
  2. 02

    Confirm quote and truck

Approve the quote and confirm the truck, from a Sprinter van to a flatbed, plus any liftgate. A licensed carrier is then booked for your load and the pickup window is set.

    • Liftgate
  3. 03

    Pick up with the BOL

The driver checks and loads the freight, and both sides sign the bill of lading with the piece count and weight. Any damage is noted before the truck leaves the dock.

    • Bill of lading
  4. 04

    Track the move

The truck runs direct to delivery. Your contact sends updates along the way and tells you right away if weather or traffic changes the arrival, so the receiver can plan.

    • Updates
  5. 05

    Inspect and sign

The receiver inspects the freight before signing, noting any damage or shortage on the delivery receipt with photos. You receive proof of delivery with the name and time.

    • Proof of delivery
  6. 06

    File a claim if needed

If there is loss or damage, gather the bill of lading, proof of delivery, photos and the value of the loss. Your contact helps you file the claim promptly with the carrier.

    • Claim documents

Claim rules and time limits depend on the carrier's terms and federal rules; confirm them before shipping high-value freight.

The upshot

One contact, whole move

The same person quotes, books, tracks and closes out your truck move.

Accountability Truck transport

One company accountable for the move

FullTruckload.com specializes in truck moves that stay accountable from your dock to final delivery, with no handoffs between desks. We match your freight to the right truck, from a Sprinter van to a 53 ft dry van or flatbed, and book a licensed carrier to haul it. When the road is too slow for the deadline, we can also arrange air freight.

Your contact shares the truck details before pickup, sends updates during the move and confirms delivery with signed proof. If anything arrives damaged, the same person helps with the claim.

This direct approach removes the guesswork about who is responsible, which reduces delays and cuts the risk of a problem going unanswered. Your shipment stays with one contact from the first quote to the final signature.

About hot shot trucks

A hot shot pairs a heavy-duty pickup with a gooseneck flatbed trailer. It is the fast choice for equipment and machinery that need an open deck but not a full semi. Ramps at the back let rolling equipment drive straight on.

Truck Transport Questions Answered

What does a truck transport company do?

A truck transport company moves freight by road for businesses and individuals. Depending on its model, it either hauls the freight with its own trucks and drivers or arranges a licensed carrier to haul it, as a broker does. The company typically quotes the move, schedules pickup, provides the right equipment for the freight, tracks the shipment and confirms delivery with proof of delivery. Some focus on full truckloads, others on flatbed, expedited or small-truck freight. Choosing one usually comes down to the freight's size, how urgent it is, how far it is going and how the company communicates.

How does freight trucking differ from vehicle transport?

Freight trucking moves goods such as pallets, parts, equipment and materials on a truck or trailer. Vehicle transport moves vehicles themselves, such as cars, pickups or commercial trucks, usually on car-carrier trailers or by driving them to the destination. The two use different equipment, rules and pricing, and most companies specialize in one or the other. Search results for truck transport often mix both meanings. If you need to move a vehicle, look for an auto or vehicle transport service; if you need to move goods, look for a freight carrier or truckload broker.

What is a straight truck?

A straight truck is a single-unit truck in which the cab and the cargo box are mounted on the same frame, rather than a tractor pulling a separate trailer. Common lengths run from about 22 to 26 ft, and a typical freight straight truck carries up to about 9,000 lbs. Many straight trucks have a liftgate at the rear, which lowers freight to the ground at sites without a loading dock. They suit mid-size loads such as several pallets, equipment or deliveries in cities where a full tractor-trailer would struggle with tight streets or small receiving areas.

What is a hot shot truck?

A hot shot truck is a heavy-duty pickup that pulls a flatbed or gooseneck trailer to move a single load, usually on short notice. Hot shots carry up to about 16,000 lbs on a deck that can run to about 40 ft. They are used for machinery, oilfield and construction equipment, steel and other freight that is too heavy for a van but does not need a full semi flatbed. Because one truck is dispatched for one customer's load and drives directly to the destination, hot shot trucking is often chosen for urgent partial loads.

What is a liftgate?

A liftgate is a powered platform mounted at the back of a truck that raises and lowers freight between the truck bed and the ground. It allows pallets and heavy items to be loaded or unloaded where there is no loading dock or forklift, such as at retail stores, offices, construction sites and homes. Box trucks and straight trucks often have liftgates, while most 53 ft trailers do not. Shippers should say whether a liftgate is needed at pickup or delivery when requesting a quote, because the wrong truck can delay or prevent the delivery.

What is cargo insurance?

Cargo insurance covers the freight itself against loss or damage while it is being transported. Motor carriers usually carry cargo liability coverage as part of their insurance, but what it pays depends on their terms, coverage limits and any released value agreed for the shipment. Shippers moving high-value goods often buy additional coverage so the full value is protected. Before shipping, it helps to request a certificate of insurance from the carrier, check the limits against the value of the freight and understand which events are excluded, such as certain types of damage or packaging failures.

What is a freight claim?

A freight claim is a formal request to a carrier for payment for freight that was lost, damaged or delayed in transit. To support a claim, the shipper or consignee should note any damage or shortage on the delivery receipt at the time of delivery, take photos, and keep the bill of lading, proof of delivery and invoices showing the value of the goods. Claims must be filed within the time limits set by the carrier's terms and federal rules. A clear record from pickup to delivery makes it much easier to show where and when the problem happened.

What is released value?

Released value is a limit on a carrier's liability for loss or damage that the shipper agrees to, usually in exchange for a lower rate. It is often stated as an amount per pound or per shipment on the bill of lading or in the carrier's terms. When freight moves at released value, a claim is paid only up to that agreed amount, even if the goods are worth more. Shippers moving valuable freight should check whether a released value applies and, if the limit is too low, ask about declaring a higher value or buying separate cargo insurance.

What is a certificate of insurance?

A certificate of insurance, often called a COI, is a document from an insurance company or agent that summarizes a business's insurance coverage. For trucking, it typically shows the carrier's auto liability and cargo coverage, the policy numbers, the coverage limits and the policy dates. Shippers and brokers request a COI to confirm that a carrier has active coverage before freight is loaded. A COI is a summary rather than the policy itself, so it does not show every exclusion. For high-value or unusual freight, it is worth asking the carrier or its insurer to confirm specific coverage.

What is proof of delivery?

Proof of delivery, or POD, is the record that a shipment reached its destination. For a truck shipment it is usually the delivery receipt or bill of lading signed by the receiver, showing their printed name, signature and the date and time of delivery, along with any notes about damage or shortage. Many carriers also provide electronic signatures or photos. The POD is used to confirm delivery to a customer, to release payment and to support or defend a freight claim. Shippers should ask how and when they will receive it before the shipment moves.
