Sprinter Vans

Would a Sprinter van be right for your smaller, time-sensitive and high-priority shipments? Sprinter” is the generic term for any full-size cargo van. Smaller and more maneuverable than a box van, these vehicles are intended primarily for short journeys in busy urban and suburban areas.

What are Sprinter Vans?

Mercedes-Benz owns the “Sprinter” name but Ford and Dodge produce very similar vehicles; the Transit and the Ram ProMaster. Sprinter vans are nimble and lightweight, yet carry a healthy payload and have surprisingly large interior volume. They are however, just as good for long distance, cross-country, and even international expedited delivery. And with our sophisticated satellite tracking technology, we know where each van is at every step of its journey, and our expeditors keep the customer informed accordingly. The vans we use are selected for their proven reliability, efficiency, capacity, and overall performance.

Sprinter Van Advantages

Sprinter vans are highly advantageous for expedited freight due to their speed, versatility, and reliability. They are designed to be nimble and fuel-efficient, allowing for quick deliveries even over long distances. With their spacious cargo areas, they can accommodate various freight sizes while keeping goods secure. Sprinter vans are also known for their durability and advanced safety features, ensuring goods are transported safely and without delays.

Versatility

Sprinter vans are particularly valued for their agility and versatility. They can navigate urban areas with ease, avoid the logistical bottlenecks that larger freight options face, and park in tight spaces that trucks can’t access. Sprinter vans don’t need loading docks and can go from pickup door to drop off location faster than just about any other form of transport.

Cargo Capacity

The cargo capacity of Sprinter vans is limited to the equivalent of three or four pallets, so they’re not intended for delivering large quantities of production parts. Rather, these are the vehicles you turn to when a small batch, a specialized tool, part or device, or other urgently needed equipment, has to be on-site as fast as possible.

Reliable Delivery

Customers for our Sprinter van service come from the oil and gas industry, manufacturing, retail, and chemical processing. Wherever there’s a need for fast, predictable, and reliable delivery, our Sprinter van service gets it done. Our service has become a trusted partner for businesses that demand the highest level of performance in their supply chain.

Speed

An important factor in choosing Sprinter van service is that DOT regulations regarding driver hours are different to those covering semi-trucks. That means fewer breaks, which is a big factor in achieving faster deliveries. When speed is essential, a Sprinter van gets the delivery to where it needs to be in less time than a truck. For businesses relying on prompt and dependable freight solutions, Sprinter vans provide a competitive edge.

Dimensions

Exact dimensions vary by model, but for planning, work on a Sprinter providing a width of 52”, a height of 70”, and up to 12’ of length. That’s enough space for three standard 48” x 40” pallets. Tiedowns are provided for securing pallets, boxes and other objects so they don’t move around in transit. Maximum payload is around 3,000 lbs. Some models will handle slightly more than this.

Loading and Unloading

With many Sprinter vans, loading and unloading is aided by a large sliding door on the side, in addition to the rear doors. Sprinters are readily loaded from a fork truck but note that the floor is below the level of a standard loading bay dock.

This lower floor height makes Sprinter vans particularly user-friendly for manual loading and unloading, reducing the need for additional equipment like dock plates or ramps in many scenarios.

Sprinter Van Types of Cargo

Their ample interior volume makes Sprinter vans incredibly versatile. Furniture, boxes or cartons, totes and pallets all go in with ease. For urgent deliveries, the typical cargo is often machine parts, special fasteners, pumps, electronics, or test equipment. Picture a specialized motor strapped to a pallet, a set of rigid Pelican instrument cases, or a dozen stackable plastic totes: these are the types of priority cargo the Sprinter was created for.

Sprinter vans are ideal for “last mile” delivery of smaller items and packages, especially in built-up urban and suburban areas. A compact turning circle means they can get into and out of alleys and other tight places where semi-trucks would struggle to maneuver. But that said, they’re just as useful for deliveries between distant locations as they can go from door to door in less time than almost any other mode of transport.

Range and Routes

While ideal for short, urgent trips across town or metropolitan area, Sprinter vans are just as good for longer journeys. This is especially true when picking up from or delivering to locations not well-served by airports. We even use them for rush pickups and deliveries in Canada and Mexico

In general, if you’ve got a small rush order – a few boxes, a high value part strapped to a pallet, or precision equipment packed into a couple of Pelican cases – a Sprinter van is good for journeys of up to 1,200 miles, and further if necessary.

Good gas mileage means refueling stops are few and far between, and DOT rules regarding driver hours are different for vans as opposed to semi-trucks. What’s more, these vehicles are engineered with driver comfort and safety top-of-mind, so driver fatigue won’t be a problem.

End to End Emergency Solutions with the Sprinter Van Service

Here’s an example of what our Sprinter van service can do. A concrete plant in Michigan suffered a pump failure that brought their operations to a halt. Unfortunately, the nearest replacement was 1,500 miles away in Texas. Concrete is a high volume, continuous production process, so unplanned downtime is very expensive: they needed that pump in Michigan in the least time possible.

Understanding the situation, and striving to be as responsive as they could, the hydraulics company that had the pump in stock contacted us for expedited delivery. We picked it up with a Sprinter van and had it on site in Michigan 28 hours later.

The production stoppage was expensive, but it would have been longer and far more costly had any other type of transportation been selected. And the pump supplier got to look like a hero. Guess who that concrete plant will call if they find themselves in a hydraulics-related jam again?

Renewables & Environment

Wind turbines can be as tall as an 85-story building with a blade radius of an acre. Transporting just one wind turbine can take up to nine separate shipments. Solar equipment includes sensitive electronics and glass that are easily subject to damage. Constructing one solar panel requires nearly 40 different components, including precious metals, that need to get to the factory on time. With requirements like this, it's critical to work with the right 3PL provider that can flex with your needs when situations and requirements change.

Retail

During downtime, retailers experience lost sales with the inability to process credit cards, access customer purchasing history, or locate items in stock at a distribution center or another retail location. Don’t let unexpected downtime due to point-of-sale equipment failures impact your brand or frustrate your customers. If you can’t serve your customers, your competition will!
