In short

One trailer, one shipper

A semi carries one shipper's load straight to the receiver.

Semi truck freight What it is

What semi truck freight is

Semi truck freight is freight carried by a tractor pulling a trailer, the familiar tractor-trailer seen on every interstate. This page is about shipping goods by semi, not about moving semi trucks themselves. A semi booked for one shipper's load collects the freight at the dock and drives straight to the receiver, with no transfers along the way.

Semis carry most of the goods shipped across the US, from pallets of retail stock and packaged food to steel, lumber and machinery. They are the standard choice when a shipment fills most of a trailer or weighs more than a smaller truck can carry.

FullTruckload.com books dedicated semis for shippers across the US, Canada and Mexico, with one point of contact from pickup to delivery.

Why it matters

The freight picks the trailer

Dry vans protect pallets; flatbeds carry steel and machinery.

Trailers Trailers and capacity

Trailers and capacity

The trailer is chosen for the freight. A 53 ft dry van is an enclosed trailer that protects freight from weather and keeps it secure, carrying up to 42,000 lbs. It suits palletized and boxed goods loaded at a dock, and its doors can be sealed for the trip. A flatbed is an open trailer carrying up to 48,000 lbs, suited to steel, lumber, pipe and machinery that load from the side or top with a forklift or crane.

A full truckload fills most or all of the trailer for one shipper. A partial load fills only part of it but still rides on its own when it needs to move direct. Weight limits matter as much as space, so dense freight can reach the limit before the trailer is full.

FullTruckload.com matches the trailer to the freight and confirms the fit before booking.

The rule

Practices keep loads moving

Live loads, drop and hook and seals each change the plan.

Practices How a load is handled

How a load is handled

A few industry practices shape every semi truck load. In a live load, the truck waits at the dock while the freight is loaded, and in a live unload it waits while the freight is taken off. With drop and hook, the driver leaves an empty trailer and picks up a loaded one, which saves waiting time at busy docks. Many warehouses work by appointment, with a set time for each truck.

At pickup, the driver signs the bill of lading, the document listing the freight. On a dry van, the doors are often sealed with a numbered seal, which the receiver checks before unloading to confirm the trailer was not opened. At delivery, the receiver checks the freight and signs, creating the proof of delivery.

These practices keep loads moving and records clear. FullTruckload.com plans each load around the shipper's and receiver's docks and schedules.

Semis carry the economy

Retail, food, manufacturing and building materials all ship by semi.

Industries How industries use semis

How industries use semis

Almost every industry depends on semi truck freight. Retailers and distributors move full trailers of stock from distribution centers to stores, with extra loads around holidays and sales. Food and beverage companies ship packaged goods on steady schedules to grocers and distributors.

Manufacturers ship finished goods to customers and receive materials and components, often on regular lanes. Building materials suppliers send lumber, steel and roofing on flatbeds to yards and job sites. Paper and packaging companies move heavy, bulky loads between mills, plants and customers.

Many of these shippers mix steady contract freight with one-off loads that need a truck quickly. FullTruckload.com helps with both, booking a dedicated semi when a load needs one.

About hot shot trucks

A hot shot pairs a heavy-duty pickup with a gooseneck flatbed trailer. It is the fast choice for equipment and machinery that need an open deck but not a full semi. Ramps at the back let rolling equipment drive straight on.

The upshot

Match the truck to the load

A smaller truck can be quicker when the load is light.

Smaller trucks When a smaller truck fits

When a smaller truck fits

Not every load needs a semi. For a few boxes or a pallet or two, a Sprinter van carries up to 3,000 lbs and is quicker to dispatch. A box truck carries up to 5,000 lbs and a straight truck up to 9,000 lbs, often with a liftgate for sites without a dock. A hot shot carries up to 16,000 lbs on an open deck for heavy parts and equipment.

Smaller trucks also suit tight city streets and sites where a long trailer cannot turn or park. To book, have ready what the freight is, the number of pieces, the weight and dimensions of each, whether it can be stacked, how it will be loaded and unloaded, both addresses, dock hours, contacts and the dates.

Complete details get the right truck booked the first time. FullTruckload.com books semi truck freight and smaller trucks alike, matched to each load.

First time customer

First time customer. Communication was fantastic throughout the entire process and is sincerely appreciated. Our customer shared an update this morning that the driver texted a little before 5 am that he would be there at 8. That’s exactly when he pulled in. She said it was a much easier process than she ever thought it would be and was very grateful.

AirFreight handled my unusual situation (my perspective) seamlessly. In response to my first call for assistance, a professional (kind, even) HUMAN answered immediately. From there, communication at every stage was clear and thorough. AirFreight is an example of how a service operation is supposed to work.

Zero problems, ahead of schedule

My only criticism is that there isn’t an option for more than five stars. I’ve been burned by more hotshot brokers than I can count, and this is the first time I’ve had a shipment show up ahead of schedule with absolutely zero damage or tampering. I could not recommend AirFreight more strongly, we will be using them exclusively going forward. A bit higher priced but frankly inexpensive compared to the problems caused by prior shippers. 11/10, no notes.

Semi Truck Freight Questions Answered

What is semi truck freight?

Semi truck freight is freight carried by a tractor pulling a trailer, also called a tractor-trailer. A semi booked for one shipper's load collects the freight at the dock and drives straight to the receiver, with no transfers. Semis carry most of the goods shipped across the US, including pallets of retail stock, packaged food, building materials, steel and machinery. The term refers to shipping goods, not moving the trucks themselves. Sharing complete details when booking helps avoid delays. A provider can confirm what is possible for a specific shipment.

How much can a semi truck carry?

A semi's capacity depends on the trailer. A 53 ft dry van carries up to 42,000 lbs of enclosed freight, and a flatbed carries up to 48,000 lbs of open-deck freight such as steel, lumber and machinery. The number of pallets that fit depends on their size and whether they can be stacked, and dense freight may reach the weight limit before the trailer is full. A provider can confirm what is possible for a specific shipment. Asking these questions before booking avoids surprises later.

What is a 53 ft dry van?

A 53 ft dry van is an enclosed trailer, 53 ft long, pulled by a tractor. It protects freight from weather and keeps it secure, and its doors can be sealed for the trip. It carries up to 42,000 lbs and is the most common trailer for palletized and boxed goods loaded at a dock. Retail, food, manufacturing and distribution freight often moves in dry vans. Asking these questions before booking avoids surprises later. Planning ahead makes the delivery go more smoothly. Sharing complete details when booking helps avoid delays.

When does freight need a flatbed?

Freight needs a flatbed when it is too large, heavy or awkward to load into an enclosed trailer, or when it must be loaded from the side or top with a forklift or crane. Common flatbed freight includes steel, lumber, pipe, machinery and building materials. A flatbed carries up to 48,000 lbs. The freight is secured with straps or chains and may be covered with tarps. Planning ahead makes the delivery go more smoothly. Sharing complete details when booking helps avoid delays. A provider can confirm what is possible for a specific shipment.

What is a full truckload?

A full truckload is a shipment that fills most or all of a trailer for one shipper, usually a 53 ft dry van or a flatbed. The trailer carries only that shipper's freight from pickup straight to delivery, with no stops to load or unload other freight. Full truckloads suit large shipments and are usually the most economical way to move a lot of freight at once. Sharing complete details when booking helps avoid delays. A provider can confirm what is possible for a specific shipment.

What is a live load?

A live load is when a truck waits at the shipper's dock while the freight is loaded onto the trailer, then leaves with it. A live unload is the same at the receiver: the truck waits while the freight is taken off. Live loading is common, but it depends on the dock being ready when the truck arrives, so having freight staged and an appointment set helps avoid waiting. A provider can confirm what is possible for a specific shipment. Asking these questions before booking avoids surprises later.

What is drop and hook?

Drop and hook is a practice in which a driver drops off an empty trailer at a shipper's or receiver's facility and hooks up to a trailer that has already been loaded, rather than waiting while freight is loaded or unloaded. It saves time at busy docks and gives the facility flexibility to load on its own schedule. It is common at large warehouses and distribution centers. Asking these questions before booking avoids surprises later. Planning ahead makes the delivery go more smoothly. Sharing complete details when booking helps avoid delays.

Which industries ship freight by semi truck?

Many industries ship freight by semi truck, including retailers and distributors restocking stores, food and beverage companies, manufacturers shipping finished goods and receiving materials, building materials suppliers, and paper and packaging companies. Most mix steady loads on regular lanes with one-off loads that need a truck quickly, such as during peaks or when a shipment is late. Planning ahead makes the delivery go more smoothly. Sharing complete details when booking helps avoid delays. A provider can confirm what is possible for a specific shipment.

When is a smaller truck better than a semi?

A smaller truck is often better when the load is light or small, when it must move very quickly, or when the delivery site cannot fit a long trailer. A Sprinter van carries up to 3,000 lbs, a box truck up to 5,000 lbs and a straight truck up to 9,000 lbs, often with a liftgate. A hot shot carries up to 16,000 lbs on an open deck for heavy parts. Sharing complete details when booking helps avoid delays. A provider can confirm what is possible for a specific shipment.

How do I book a semi truck for my freight?

To book a semi, gather what the freight is, the number of pieces, the weight and dimensions of each, whether it can be stacked, how it will be loaded and unloaded, the pickup and delivery addresses, dock hours, appointment requirements, contacts and the dates. Share the details with a carrier or truckload broker, which matches a trailer to the freight, confirms the quote and books the truck. A provider can confirm what is possible for a specific shipment. Asking these questions before booking avoids surprises later.
