In short

The company that hauls it

A motor freight carrier supplies the truck and driver that move your freight by road.

Motor freight carrier What it is

What a motor freight carrier is

A motor freight carrier is a company that moves freight by truck on public roads. Motor freight simply means freight carried by motor vehicle, as opposed to by air, water or another mode. The carrier supplies the truck and the driver, and it is responsible for the freight while it is on the road.

Carriers that haul freight across state lines fall under federal rules. They must register with the federal government, keep insurance on file and follow safety rules for drivers, vehicles and hours of service. Carriers that stay within one state follow that state's rules as well.

FullTruckload.com books licensed motor carriers for shippers across the US, Canada and Mexico. Each load gets a dedicated truck that runs direct, with one contact tracking it 24/7.

Carrier types Motor freight carrier

For-hire, private, owner-operator or fleet

Motor carriers come in several shapes. A for-hire carrier hauls other companies' freight for payment, and it is the kind most shippers book. A private carrier is a company that runs its own trucks to move its own goods, such as a manufacturer delivering to its own stores.

Size varies too. An owner-operator owns and drives one truck, either under their own authority or leased to a larger carrier. A fleet carrier runs many trucks with employed or contracted drivers. Both can provide excellent service, and both appear side by side in carrier directories.

FullTruckload.com books for-hire carriers of every size, matched to the load. Your contact tells you which carrier will haul your freight before the truck is dispatched.

Equipment Motor freight carrier

The equipment motor carriers run

Motor carriers run different trucks for different freight, so the equipment matters as much as the carrier. Full loads of boxed or palletized freight usually ride in a 53 ft dry van, which carries up to 42,000 lbs. Machinery, steel and building materials go on a flatbed, up to 48,000 lbs, or a hot shot, up to 16,000 lbs, for heavy partial loads.

Smaller loads fit smaller trucks. A straight truck carries up to 9,000 lbs and often has a liftgate, a box truck up to 5,000 lbs, and a Sprinter van up to 3,000 lbs for urgent boxes and a pallet or two.

FullTruckload.com matches the equipment to your freight's weight, size and loading method, then books a licensed carrier that runs it.

Motor Freight Carrier Questions Answered

What is a motor freight carrier?

A motor freight carrier is a company that transports freight by truck on public roads. It provides the trucks and drivers and is responsible for the freight while it is in transit. Motor carriers can be for-hire, hauling other companies' goods for payment, or private, hauling their own goods. Carriers that operate across state lines must register with the federal government, keep insurance on file and follow federal safety rules. Motor freight carriers range from single-truck owner-operators to large fleets with thousands of trucks.

What does motor freight mean?

Motor freight means freight transported by motor vehicle, which in practice means by truck on public roads. The term separates trucking from other modes of freight transportation, such as air and water. Motor freight includes everything from small loads in cargo vans to full truckloads in 53 ft trailers and heavy freight on flatbeds. Companies that move motor freight are called motor carriers or motor freight carriers, and much of the freight moved within the United States travels this way for at least part of its journey.

What is the difference between a motor carrier and a broker?

A motor carrier owns or leases trucks, employs or contracts drivers and physically hauls freight. A freight broker does not haul freight. It arranges transportation by matching a shipper's load with a licensed motor carrier, then manages communication and tracking until delivery. Both need federal authority to operate across state lines, but they hold different types: carrier authority for hauling and broker authority for arranging. Shippers use brokers to reach many carriers and trucks quickly, and carriers directly when they run the lanes needed.

What is a USDOT number?

A USDOT number is a unique identifier issued by the U.S. Department of Transportation to companies that operate commercial vehicles in interstate commerce and to some that operate only within certain states. It is used to track a company's safety information, including inspections, crashes, audits and compliance reviews. The number is usually displayed on the side of the truck. Shippers can use a carrier's USDOT number to look up its public safety record and confirm basic information about the company before freight is loaded.

What is an MC number?

An MC number is a docket number issued by the federal government to companies that have operating authority to transport regulated freight for hire across state lines, or to arrange such transport as brokers. It shows that the company has been granted permission to operate as a for-hire carrier or broker. The authority linked to an MC number stays active only while the required insurance and other filings are kept current. Shippers often check a carrier's MC number to confirm its authority is active before booking.

What is operating authority?

Operating authority is federal permission for a company to operate as a for-hire motor carrier or freight broker in interstate commerce. It defines the type of operation a company may perform and the kinds of goods it may carry. To keep authority active, a motor carrier must maintain the required liability insurance on file and designate agents for legal process in each state. If insurance lapses, authority can be revoked. Shippers can see whether a carrier's authority is active in its public federal record.

How do I check a motor carrier?

Shippers can check a motor carrier by looking up its USDOT or MC number in the federal government's public company records. The record shows whether the carrier's operating authority is active, whether insurance is on file, its safety rating if it has been reviewed, and recent roadside inspection and out-of-service results. Shippers can also ask the carrier for a certificate of insurance and references. Working with a broker that shares the carrier's details at booking lets shippers look up each carrier themselves.

What is an owner-operator?

An owner-operator is a truck driver who owns or leases the truck they drive and runs it as a business. Some owner-operators hold their own operating authority and book loads directly or through brokers, while others lease their truck to a larger carrier and haul under that carrier's authority. Owner-operators are a large part of the trucking industry and often appear in carrier directories as single-truck companies. When an owner-operator hauls a load, the same federal rules for authority, insurance and safety apply as for any other carrier.

What is a private carrier?

A private carrier is a company that operates its own trucks to transport its own goods rather than hauling freight for others. Examples include manufacturers delivering to customers, retailers supplying their own stores and distributors running their own delivery fleets. Private carriers must follow federal safety rules and register for a USDOT number when they operate commercial vehicles across state lines, but they do not need for-hire operating authority because they are not paid to haul other companies' freight. Many private fleets also use for-hire carriers at busy times.

How do I book a motor freight carrier?

To book a motor freight carrier, a shipper can contact a carrier directly or work with a broker that books licensed carriers. Have the load details ready: what the freight is, the number of pieces, weight and dimensions, the pickup and delivery addresses, dock or liftgate needs and the ready and delivery dates. Ask for the carrier's name, USDOT and MC numbers and insurance details before pickup. Confirm the pickup time, how the load will be tracked and who to contact if anything changes.
