A whole truck, one shipment

Dedicated transport reserves a truck for your freight and drives it straight through.

Dedicated transport What it means

What dedicated transport means

From a sealed trailer of electronics to a single crate of medical equipment, dedicated transport for one shipment means a truck reserved for your freight alone. No other customer's goods are loaded, and the truck drives directly from pickup to delivery with no terminal stops or transfers.

The term is also used for dedicated contract fleets, where trucks and drivers work a shipper's lanes for years under an agreement. That is a different service built for steady volume. This page covers dedicated transport booked for a specific shipment.

FullTruckload.com books exclusive-use trucks for shippers across the US, Canada and Mexico. We give you direct access to trucks of every size through licensed carriers, backed by one point of contact who manages the move from pickup to delivery. Every shipment is monitored from start to finish.

When to use it Dedicated transport

When a shipment needs its own truck

When freight is valuable, fragile or on a strict deadline, sharing a truck adds risk. High-value goods are safer when no one else's freight is loaded beside them. Fragile and no-touch items should be handled once at pickup and once at delivery, not again at a terminal.

Time-definite deliveries, such as a production part for a shift start or fixtures for a store opening, need a truck that runs on your schedule. Sealed loads stay sealed only if the trailer is never opened in transit. Multi-stop runs that must go in a set order also suit a dedicated truck.

We support each of these with a truck reserved for your shipment. It's also the simplest way to keep control of a sensitive load, so FullTruckload.com books it for exclusive use from the start.

What is included Dedicated transport

What the service includes

Dedicated transport providers usually plan the whole move around the shipment, including the equipment, the pickup and the delivery appointment. This means the shipper knows how the freight will be handled whenever a load is sensitive or urgent. The truck is matched to the freight, and a licensed carrier is booked for that shipment only.

You get one point of contact who confirms the carrier and driver details, sends updates on the road, with GPS tracking where available, and coordinates the delivery appointment with the receiver. At the end, you receive signed proof of delivery with any exceptions noted.

Our dispatch team is available around the clock, including weekends and holidays, so dedicated moves can start at any hour. FullTruckload.com plans each move to make sure your freight arrives exactly as it left.

Equipment Dedicated transport

Choosing the equipment

A 53 ft dry van carries up to 42,000 lbs, larger than any straight truck and fully enclosed, so it can be sealed for the whole trip. A flatbed carries up to 48,000 lbs of open-deck freight. For partial loads, a hot shot takes up to 16,000 lbs on an open deck, and a straight truck up to 9,000 lbs in an enclosed box, often with a liftgate.

Smaller dedicated moves use a box truck, up to 5,000 lbs, or a Sprinter van, up to 3,000 lbs. Enclosed trucks suit freight that must stay dry or out of sight, while open decks suit machinery and materials loaded by crane or forklift.

We match the equipment to your freight and your sites. FullTruckload.com confirms the weight, dimensions and handling needs first, so the right truck is reserved.

Why it matters

Sealed and untouched

A seal and no transfers mean your freight is handled only at pickup and delivery.

Security Dedicated transport

Security and handling on the road

While shared freight is opened and moved at terminals, a dedicated truck keeps your load closed from pickup to delivery. A seal applied at pickup and checked at delivery shows that no one opened the trailer in transit. With no transfers or cross-docks, the freight is handled once at each end.

Long time-definite runs are planned around driver hours. Stops are planned, and the delivery appointment is confirmed before arrival. As with most truckload freight, distance, the type of truck, how soon you need it and handling needs all affect the cost.

For sensitive freight, a sealed, direct truck provides a balance of control and speed that shared service can't match. This makes FullTruckload.com's exclusive-use trucks a practical choice for loads that must arrive untouched.

Dedicated freight by the numbers

$2.3 million

cost of one hour of downtime at a large automotive plant1

What it means for you

When one late delivery stops a plant, the cost of waiting far outruns the cost of reserving a truck. That is why shippers book dedicated transport for critical freight, and why FullTruckload.com plans each move around the delivery that cannot slip.

73%

of US freight value moved by truck in 20242

Trucks carry most of the value of U.S. freight, so how sensitive freight moves matters to a large share of business.

11 hours

maximum driving time per shift for a solo truck driver3

Driver hours limit how far one driver can go in a shift, which is why long time-definite runs are planned around them.

39.3%

of truck stops involved driver detention in 20234

Long waits at docks are common, so confirmed appointments help keep dedicated moves on schedule.

The upshot

One truck, one contact

Your freight stays on a reserved truck with one contact watching it.

How we run it Dedicated transport

How FullTruckload.com runs a dedicated move

FullTruckload.com specializes in dedicated moves that keep sensitive freight on one truck from your dock to final delivery with no transfers. We match the truck to your freight, book a licensed carrier for your shipment only and give you the carrier's name and the driver details before pickup.

Your contact records the seal, follows the truck, confirms the delivery appointment with the receiver and sends you signed proof of delivery. If anything changes on the road, you hear about it right away, along with the plan to fix it.

This direct approach removes the handling where freight is damaged, delayed or opened, which cuts the risk to your most important loads. Your shipment stays with one truck and one contact from pickup to signature.

Dedicated Transport Questions Answered

What does dedicated transportation mean?

Dedicated transportation means a truck, and sometimes a driver, is reserved for one shipper rather than shared with others. The term is used in two ways. For a single shipment, it means an exclusive-use truck that carries only that shipper's freight and drives directly to the destination. For ongoing freight, it means a dedicated contract fleet, where a carrier assigns trucks and drivers to a shipper's lanes under a multi-year agreement. Both avoid sharing space with other customers' goods, but they differ in commitment: one is booked per shipment, the other is a long-term contract.

What is exclusive use in trucking?

Exclusive use means a shipper reserves an entire truck or trailer for its shipment, even if the freight does not fill all the space. No other freight is added, and the truck usually travels directly from pickup to delivery. Shippers request exclusive use for high-value, fragile or time-critical freight, for loads that must stay sealed, and for freight that should not be handled at terminals. Because the shipper pays for the whole truck, exclusive use costs more than shared or consolidated service, but it gives more control over timing, handling and security.

What is a sealed load?

A sealed load is a shipment in an enclosed trailer or truck whose doors are closed with a numbered security seal after loading. The seal number is recorded on the bill of lading, and the receiver checks that the seal is intact and the number matches before opening the doors. An intact seal shows the trailer was not opened during transit. Sealed loads are common for high-value goods, food and pharmaceuticals, and freight under customs control. Keeping a load sealed generally requires a dedicated truck, because shared freight is opened at terminals.

What is co-loading?

Co-loading means combining freight from more than one shipper on the same truck or trailer. It allows each shipper to pay for only the space their freight uses, which lowers cost, but it adds stops and handling as freight is loaded, unloaded or moved between vehicles. Co-loaded freight may pass through terminals or cross-docks, which increases the chance of delay, damage or loss. Shippers with sensitive, urgent or high-value freight often ask for no co-loading, which in practice means booking an exclusive-use truck.

What is a multi-stop route?

A multi-stop route is a single truck trip that makes more than one pickup or delivery stop, often in a set order. Shippers use multi-stop routes to deliver to several stores, job sites or customers in one run, or to collect parts from several suppliers for one plant. On a dedicated truck, the stops follow the shipper's plan rather than a shared route designed around many customers. Clear stop sequences, appointment times and contacts at each location keep a multi-stop route on schedule and make sure the right freight comes off at each stop.

What is time-definite delivery?

Time-definite delivery is a service in which a shipment must arrive by a specific time or within a set window, rather than on a general day. It is common for production parts timed to a shift, retail deliveries for store openings and freight with a fixed appointment at a distribution center. Meeting a time-definite delivery usually requires planning the pickup, the route and driver hours around the deadline. A dedicated truck makes time-definite delivery easier because the schedule is built around one shipment.

What is dedicated contract carriage?

Dedicated contract carriage is an arrangement in which a carrier provides trucks, trailers and drivers that work exclusively for one shipper, usually under a multi-year contract. The equipment runs the shipper's routes on its schedule, while the carrier handles hiring, maintenance, insurance and compliance. It gives the shipper reserved capacity and consistent service without owning a fleet. Dedicated contract carriage suits steady, predictable volume, because the shipper pays for the assigned trucks even in slower weeks. Irregular or one-off freight is usually better served by booking a dedicated truck per shipment.

What is direct drive?

Direct drive means a truck travels straight from the pickup to the delivery location without stopping at terminals, cross-docks or other customers' sites. The freight stays on the same truck and is handled only at loading and unloading. Direct drive is standard for full truckloads and exclusive-use dedicated trucks. It shortens transit, reduces handling and the risk of damage or loss, and makes the shipment easier to track. Shared or consolidated freight usually moves through several stops and facilities, which adds time and handling.

What is a high-value load?

A high-value load is a shipment whose value is significantly higher than typical freight, such as electronics, pharmaceuticals, precision equipment, metals or luxury goods. High-value loads carry a greater risk of theft and a greater cost if damaged, so shippers often require extra precautions: an exclusive-use truck, seals, limited or planned stops and GPS tracking. Shippers should also confirm cargo insurance coverage and any declared value before shipping, because standard carrier liability may not cover the full value.

What is a cross-dock?

A cross-dock is a facility where freight is unloaded from one truck and loaded onto another, usually with little or no storage time in between. Carriers and shippers use cross-docks to combine or split shipments and route them to different destinations efficiently. While cross-docking can lower costs for routine freight, each transfer adds handling, time and a point where freight can be damaged, delayed or misrouted. Shippers with sensitive or urgent freight often avoid cross-docks by booking a dedicated truck that drives directly from pickup to delivery.
